Blades are the most expensive components of a wind-turbine system. They are subjected to extreme weather conditions and must withstand extreme loads. Blades and the reliability and cost of the energy the turbines produce are interconnected. Poor blade quality results in inefficiencies, breakdowns and, ultimately, less energy production. Therefore, specialist maintenance is vital to ensure optimal turbine conditions.
CAN Renewables offers specialist multibrand blade restoration and maintenance technical solutions and services. Although we are a new company, our blade credentials come from a blade technical team that has significant multiblade experience. We combine hi-tech unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, industry knowledge and access expertise techniques to service blades and prolong blade life to support your assets.
As part of an environmental services business, CAN Renewables is passionate about the environment and sustainability. Like you, we know that wind power is vital to achieving a net-zero, carbon-free future. Asset inspection and preventive maintenance are critical to maximising energy output and ensuring a return on investment for a wind-turbine system, regardless of the manufacturer. CAN Renewables draws on more than 20 years of experience in supporting clients with on- and offshore wind energy generation.
CAN Renewables is an operations and maintenance contractor that offers a collaborative technical approach. We combine multiblade experience with an understanding of the challenges facing the energy sector: cost efficiency, turbine downtime and energy optimisation. The in-house blade team provides the technical credentials that ensure CAN Renewables’ condition assessment, repair and protection methods deliver blade endurance and conservation.
In challenging environments, safety and well-being are crucial. With almost 30 years of infrastructure project experience, our in-house design engineers facilitate manufacturing bespoke access equipment to help us deliver work safely and efficiently. Our plant and equipment fabrication facility enables us to build the right tools for your project. CAN designs are externally tested and CE marked. Our highly qualified team inspects, maintains and recertifies our equipment in-house.
Regular inspections are vital for safe and sustainable operations with the priority of maintaining optimal asset performance. To maximise the cost-effectiveness of inspections, the quality and consistency of data need to be exceptional. CAN Renewables uses a specialist mix of blade repair technicians and hi-tech UAV technology to provide the highest-quality inspection programmes.
UAV inspection is the most cost-effective and efficient way of inspecting rotor blades, and CAN Renewables provides high-quality images, thermal imaging and video. When a defect is recorded, our specialist blade repair technicians can safely remedy the issue in real time, if required.
Blade inspection by blade technicians using access expertise ensures accuracy. A hands-on condition assessment assures accurate damage classification and provides the correct recommendation for repair, thus avoiding misidentification of defects. Inspection by blade technicians also enables further investigation using non-destructive or destructive test methods, such as taking core material moisture readings, crack investigation, testing the lightning protection system or drain hole clearance, thus mitigating the cost of further investigation.
To maximise asset lifespan, asset integrity and return on investment, preventive maintenance and repairs are essential. With years of experience, our blade technical team can carry out blade repairs that prolong the lifespan and overall effectiveness of the asset. We can fix damage caused by leading-edge erosion, bond-line failure, moisture intrusion, freeze–thaw cycling, lightning damage and much more.
CAN Renewables offers solutions through a combination of preventive maintenance and repair. Our post-inspection approach is to work with equipment manufacturers and asset owners to assess damage categories in line with global industry standards; our extensive knowledge allows us to identify and repair all categories of damage from one to five. We also have the expertise to carry out nacelle repairs and uplifts; tower/monopile corrosion removal; and hub, spinner and cowling repairs.
Leading-edge erosion, which affects almost all wind turbines, impairs their performance. Rain, hail, sand, dust and other airborne particulates adversely affect a blade’s aerodynamic efficiency, thereby reducing the turbine’s annual energy production and lifetime profitability. CAN Renewables has extensive experience of working with many leading-edge protection applications including tapes, paints, shells and custom-fit systems.
